How effective is an inquiry and design based approach for primary science and technology education, in terms of pupils’ learning outcomes and pupils’ attitude towards science and technology?

Samenvatting
For our knowledge and technology oriented society it is important to increase the number of students choosing a scientific or technical career, and provide people with a basic understanding of technological principles. Therefore, increasing people’s knowledge and enhancing their attitude towards technology should start already in primary education. An inquiry and design based pedagogical approach seems to be promising in engaging pupils and teachers in technology education and producing positive effects, such as increased learning outcomes and a positive attitude towards technology. In this research project, we investigate the effects of this approach on pupils’ learning outcomes and attitude, as well as teachers’ self-efficacy, knowledge and attitude. Furthermore, the relations between these teacher and pupil factors will be examined.
