Research program Professional learning

The Eindhoven School of Education (ESoE) wants to be a centre of expertise that generates, by bringing together theory and practice, empirically founded knowledge that supports the professional development of teachers and educational innovations. We think teacher quality is the single most important factor determining the quality of education, and therefore we focus, in the full chain leading from concept development to teaching and learning, on the role of the professional teacher. We want the knowledge we generate for teachers to be relevant for the international scientific community also.

ESoE wants to create synergy between praxis, research and innovation of education. Improving the quality of education should, we feel, be supported not only by acknowledging user perspectives on the working environments and professional development of teachers, but also by scientific research and by innovation of education. It is in this respect that educational research needs to be relevant for the innovation of education in schools. ESoE mainly focuses on the domains of science and technology.

Our research program is called 'Professional Learning'. The key questions in this research program are:

  • how do recently graduated teacher mature into professionals?
  • which circumstances and means optimally support their development?

Important topics studied in the program are experiental learning, workplace learning, informal learning, expertise development, enculturation and encapsulation.

Detailed information may be found in ESoE's full research program.
