Jacob Perrenet studied mathematics and physics at Utrecht University and was a teacher for some time, mainly for mathematics at various levels. Next, he studied cognitive psychology at the University of Amsterdam. He participated in mathematics education research projects: Algebra in primary education (Utrecht University), Construction and validation of a transfer test for mathematics (VU University Amsterdam), Adaptive Group Instruction (Utrecht University), and Complex Instruction (University of Amsterdam). He did his PhD at the University of Amsterdam about collaborative and individual problem solving by students in secondary mathematics education.

Jacob Perrenet was involved in the development and innovation of higher technological education for about ten years, at Knowledge Engineering (Maastricht University), Biomedical Technology (Eindhoven University of Technology) and for the implementation of Design Based Education at the Eindhoven University of Technology at large. Next, for some years, he was associated with the study programmes of Applied Mathematics, Computer Science, and Computer Science Education of the TU/e.

Since 2007, he is associated with ESoE, for teacher training (Science Education and Communication), for coaching PhD students, and for research into mathematics education and computer science education. Still, he is also associated with the mathematics and computer science programmes of the TU/e. Last but not at least, he participates in the project Academic Competencies and Quality Assurance, that measures the academic profile of programmes at the TU/e and at other technical universities.
